Job Search Mistakes Candidates Should Avoid

Common job search mistakes to avoid

Many capable candidates miss good opportunities not because they lack skills, but because of avoidable mistakes during the job search. Recruiters see the same issues again and again. Here are ten of the most common, and what to do instead.

1. Sending the same resume to every job

A generic resume rarely matches any job well. Recruiters screening for a sales role want to see sales skills first; for an accounts role, Tally and GST.

Instead: keep a base resume and adjust the summary and the order of skills for each type of role. Our resume tips explain how.

2. Applying without reading the job description

Applying to roles that do not match your location, experience or availability wastes your time and the recruiter’s.

Instead: check the location, working hours, experience required and salary before applying. Apply where you genuinely fit or come close.

3. Missing calls and messages from recruiters

Recruiters often call shortlisted candidates on the same day. An unanswered phone, a full voicemail or a delayed reply can mean the slot goes to someone else.

Instead: keep the number on your resume active, answer unknown numbers politely during your job search and reply to messages promptly.

4. Careless details on the resume

Spelling errors, a wrong phone number, an unprofessional email address or dates that do not add up create a poor first impression.

Instead: proofread carefully and ask someone else to check your resume before you send it.

5. Exaggerating experience or skills

Overstating your experience may get you an interview, but it usually becomes obvious when the interviewer asks for details, and background checks can confirm it.

Instead: describe your real experience well. Honest, well-explained experience is more convincing than inflated claims.

6. Not preparing for interviews

Walking in without knowing the company, the role or your own resume is one of the fastest ways to lose an offer.

Instead: research the employer, prepare examples and practise common questions. Start with our guide to 10 common interview questions, or our first interview preparation checklist if you are a fresher.

7. Not confirming or missing interviews

Not turning up for a scheduled interview without informing anyone damages your reputation with the employer and the recruiter.

Instead: confirm the interview the day before. If you cannot attend, inform the recruiter as early as possible and ask to reschedule.

8. Ignoring the commute and working hours

Accepting a job without checking the daily travel time or shift timings often leads to leaving within weeks, which also affects your next applications.

Instead: before accepting, check the exact office location, the travel time at peak hours and the working days.

9. Sharing sensitive information too soon

Genuine employers and recruiters do not need your bank passwords, OTPs or card details to process an application.

Instead: verify the company and recruiter before sharing documents, and never share OTPs or passwords. Be cautious of anyone who guarantees a job without an interview. If you are targeted by fraud, report it on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call 1930.

10. Giving up after a few rejections

Rejections are a normal part of every job search. Stopping after a few “no” answers means missing the opportunities that come later.

Instead: ask for feedback where possible, adjust your resume or interview answers and keep applying steadily. Our guide on finding the right job in Jaipur explains how to plan a focused search.
