How to Prepare for Your First Job Interview

Job interview preparation tips for freshers

Your first job interview can feel stressful, especially when you have no work experience to talk about. The good news is that employers interviewing freshers do not expect experience. They look for a clear understanding of the role, good communication, a willingness to learn and a positive attitude. Careful preparation shows all of these. Here is a step-by-step plan.

One week before: understand the role and the company

  • Read the job description line by line. Note the main responsibilities, required skills, working hours, location and salary range.
  • Research the company. Visit its website and social pages. Understand what it does, who its customers are and where its office is.
  • Match yourself to the role. For each requirement, write down something from your studies, projects, internships or part-time work that shows you can do it.

Prepare your self-introduction

“Tell me about yourself” is usually the first question. Prepare a one-minute answer covering:

  1. your name and education (degree, college, year);
  2. one or two relevant skills or projects;
  3. why you are interested in this role.

Practise it aloud until it sounds natural, not memorised. Our guide to 10 common interview questions includes an example introduction and answers to the other questions you are likely to hear.

Use your projects and activities as examples

Freshers can talk about college projects, internships, events they organised, part-time jobs, sports or volunteering. For each example, explain the situation, what you did and the result. This shows teamwork, responsibility and problem-solving – the same skills employers look for in experienced candidates.

Know your resume thoroughly

Interviewers often ask about anything written on your resume. Be ready to explain every project, skill and certificate you have listed. If you have written “MS Excel”, expect a question on what you have used it for. Remove anything you cannot speak about confidently. Our resume tips explain how to write a simple fresher resume.

The day before: get everything ready

  • Printed copies of your resume (two or three).
  • Original certificates and a set of photocopies.
  • A government photo ID and passport-size photographs.
  • A pen and a small notebook.
  • The interview address, time and the contact person’s name and phone number.

Plan your route and travel time. In Jaipur traffic, leave early enough to arrive 10–15 minutes before your interview.

What to wear

Choose clean, well-ironed, formal or smart-casual clothes. For most office, sales and customer-facing roles, a formal shirt and trousers, or a simple kurta or saree, works well. Comfortable, neat footwear and simple grooming matter more than expensive clothes.

Online interviews

If your interview is on video, test your internet, camera and microphone beforehand. Sit in a quiet place with light on your face, keep your phone on silent and join a few minutes early. Dress as you would for an in-person interview.

During the interview

  • Greet the interviewer politely and wait to be offered a seat.
  • Listen to the full question before answering; it is fine to take a moment to think.
  • Keep answers clear and honest. If you do not know something, say so and say how you would find out.
  • Show interest in learning. Freshers who are eager to learn are often preferred.
  • At the end, ask one or two questions, such as what training is provided or what a typical day looks like.

After the interview: follow up

Send a short thank-you message to the recruiter or contact person on the same day. If you were told when to expect an answer and have not heard back, follow up politely once. Whatever the result, note which questions were difficult and prepare better answers for the next interview.
